Expression Shoots are just $25 and include a 15 min. in studio session for one child only, ages 1-15 years and are offered exclusively on select dates. Children are photographed in one outfit, against one background. All shots are “head shots” - close ups that capture “expressions”. Digital files are offered at 50% off our regular pricing. No printed portraits are available for purchase with these sessions.

Here are a couple of samples photographed down by the water.

Family Portrait - I love these outfits. The blue contrasts wonderfully with the white and the green is a great accent color. Their clothing is so well coordinated without having everyone dressed identically. I couldn't have asked for a nicer family to photograph!

Individual Portrait - One of my very favorite kids to photograph! He has such an imagination, is full of energy, and gave me some great facial expressions. He was cracking us all up!

English Beauties

These three lovely ladies could not have been more up for their photo shoot. They were such good listeners and the two older girls were a terrific help with their little sister, carefully holding her and helping to get her to smile.

The girls had two very special visitors from England, their aunt and cousin, who along with their mom, shared in the portrait session and got the girls giggling :).

We get lots of phone calls asking if the senior portrait season ends when school starts. It definitely does not. We continue to take senior portraits all the way up until right before graduation. Each school has a different due date for yearbook portraits. Make sure to double check when yours is due and then give us a call :).

Quick Changes to Create Different Looks

Clients always ask "How many times can we change outfits?". The answer is simple - as many times as you'd like during the length of your scheduled session. Making quick changes is the best way to end up with the greatest number of different looks in your finished portraits.

This gorgeous little girl and her mom did a terrific job of bringing a few simple articles of clothing to swap in and out of her portraits. The results are great! They have pictures with a bow in her hair, a scarf around her neck, her favorite Hello Kitty hat, and each change took about 2 seconds. There wasn't a lot of wasted time on complicated clothing changes.

I appreciate so much all the planning my clients put into making their shoots a success. Having three kids of my own, I realize how much effort it takes after a busy day at work to feed your kids, dress them for pictures and get them to the portrait location on time, all with a smile on your face :).
Not only did the Rosa's accomplish all of this, but they were fabulously color coordinated as well!

A Van for Nia

I had a wonderful time last week photographing Nia and her family. They were the recipients of our second place portrait prize in our facebook contest. We appreciate all our facebook fans so much! Nia is a 7th grade student who has been wheelchair bound her entire life. She recently received a power wheelchair and is enjoying the independence it gives her. Unfortunately, she can only use the chair at school because her family doesn't have a way to transport it. Her dedicated team of professionals (at school), is raising money to purchase a wheelchair accessible van for Nia's family. It is impossible not to fall in love with this little girl. She is so happy, friendly and talkative.

Growing Families

My favorite thing about being a photographer is getting to meet so many new people and then developing relationships with them. I met Trip when I photographed him for the first time. I then helped him put together a slide show for his mother's retirement party and another one for his wedding rehearsal. A year later, I had the pleasure of creating Trip and Beth's maternity portraits. This week I finally got to meet and photograph their beautiful son with his big blue eyes and blond hair. He is just too cute!
The day was perfect with overcast skies and a cool breeze. We took the pictures at their home for sentimental reasons and Trip's parents came to help get those "real smiles".
I love the artistic part of photography, the moments I capture and preserve in people's lives, but what really makes my job wonderful is the friendships I make along the way.

Involving Kids in Your Shoot

It is always so nice to reconnect with people you haven't seen in ages. I hadn't seen Kim since high school (almost 20 years). She contacted me through our Facebook fan page to have pictures taken of her girls on her trip into town this weekend. It was so nice to catch up with her and meet her beautiful daughters.

Kim chose one outfit for her girls to wear and let them choose the other. This is an excellent idea when planning portrait clothing for kids of any age. Mom gets the outfit she really likes and the kids feel more excited about the shoot because they have been part of the planning process. It's also important for kids to feel comfortable and attractive in the clothing they're wearing. That confidence comes through in the portraits. Allowing them choose an outfit or two accomplishes this goal as well.

Photographing Toddlers

If you have a one to three year old and have attempted to have their portraits created in a studio without success, try having them photographed outside. The studio setting is often intimidating to little ones. The big flashing lights, the unfamiliar people, the huge backgrounds and clutter of props can just be too overwhelming for toddlers. I have found that taking little kids outside makes them feel much more comfortable. They are free to run around. I can play games with them and then the smiles just come naturally.
We recently implemented this strategy with the beautiful little girl above. Moving from inside the studio to the courtyard helped to put her at ease. Aren't her curls adorable!

Waterfall Shoot

I love when clients suggest a new location for their shoot, especially when the location is meaningful to them. I met Daniel and his mother at a waterfall, by their home in Aurora, where their family frequently hiked and picnicked when Daniel was younger. The rocks, water, moss and trees created a beautiful backdrop.
We finished up, back at the studio, with some yearbook "shots". What a nice way to spend the morning!

Warm Weather - Finally

Today was just gorgeous, sunny and 65. We couldn't have asked for better weather.

This little guy's grandmother brought him into the studio to have his portraits created. Like most two year olds, he wanted to run. We took him outside and chased him around to capture these great shots. He found rocks, ran up and down hills, checked out a tractor, and lots more. He was full of energy.

I love his devilish looks and smile - he's up to something :). What a cutie!

Anna and Bella

Finally caught a break from all the rain and was fortunate enough to photograph these two sisters in the sunshine! Bella and Anna are beautiful! Just look at their eyes. Their mom picked out a great spot in Hudson for our shoot and the girls brought a couple of outfits each, so we were able to capture a lot of different looks for them in a short amount of time.
This family was referred to our studio by one of our long time clients. Thanks Jennifer! Referrals are such great compliments and we appreciate them so much!

Forget Me Nots Party

Carson, Lana and Belle attended our Forget Me Nots Jewelry and Portrait Party. Their outfits were perfect for Spring. The colors went so well together. The girls and their mother actually made the shirts the girls were wearing. I was so impressed. They were fabulous!

I enjoyed watching these three make each other laugh! Alissa and Ashley were so patient and caring with their little brother, Gavin and Gavin was so cooperative. I met their mom a few years ago at a Hudson Preschool Parents' meeting and was so pleased to see her again and get the chance to meet her children. I love their big brown eyes!

Dream Come True

I love capturing people's personalities, chasing little kids around until I get their "real" smiles, preserving memories for my clients, marking milestones, documenting relationships between loved ones. I first met Samantha and her mom when I photographed Samantha for her 16th birthday. It was so nice to see them again and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to create Samantha's senior portraits. The weather has been so rainy, but we lucked out and got our shoot in at the park without incident.

I have been photographing Logan and Olivia since Olivia was just a few months old. It is so fun to watch how they are growing and changing. I have always thought that Logan looks so much like his dad and that Olivia resembles her mom, but in these most recent portraits I think even more so. The smile Olivia is giving is the exact one I have seen on her mom's face time and time again. I love it!

Braden's parents brought him to our Jewelry Party to have his portraits created. He is all boy with tons of smiles. Braden's mom and dad were great at getting him to laugh. We ran around the farmhouse porch and barn. He wanted to explore everywhere. He allowed us to pose him on a chair and a couple of rocks, but for the most part, he wanted to run! I had a great time photographing this little man.

Saturday was a gorgeous day and we were excited to have so many people join us for our Portrait Jewlery Party at Case Barlow Farm. This is the first sneak peek at one of the sessions photographed during our party. There were so many wonderful places to shoot - the barn, the covered porch, the garden ... We had so much fun visiting with long time clients and meeting new friends.

I adore the outfit Sophia's mom pick out for her. The colors,textures and layers are terrific! Sophia wasn't about to sit still with so many places to explore, so we ran around the farm together and I am so pleased with the results. Sophia gave us some beautiful expressions!

Natalie and McKenna have been dancing together for 10 years, over which time they have become best friends. I loved photographing the two of them together. Not only are they beautiful, but it was evident that they share such a warm friendship. They seemed almost like sisters.

Baby Isabel

Nothing is sweeter than a newborn! Today I was lucky enough to spend the morning with Isabel, her mother, her big brother and her grandmother. In home shoots are quickly becoming a favorite of mine. The atmosphere is just so relaxed!

Isabel was such a good sleeper. She put up with our moving her around, changing her clothing and even interrupting her meal time. The window light couldn't have been better, despite the rain, and her big brother was understanding about our giving all of the attention to his new sister. He kept himself entertained watching his favorite show - Star Wars.

Photo Shoot at the Lake

I often get calls from worried clients when the sun is not shining brightly the day of their shoot. I always reassure them that I actually prefer overcast days. The bright sunlight can cast harsh shadows and cause subjects to squint. I much prefer overcast skies. We aren't restricted to shady spots, so there are many more places to shoot.

I had the good fortune to meet the Shumaker family at the park a couple of days ago. I couldn't believe their son was just turning two. He was wearing a smile for over an hour. We had perfectly cloudy skies and a nice breeze to create movement in the portraits. Warm tones were added during the retouching process to add that sunny glow.

Playing with Addison

Sometimes the best way to get awesome portraits of two year olds is to play! We started out by photographing Addison in her home using window light. The images are dramatic and full of feeling. In one of my favorites, she is pouting out her little bottom lip.

Then we went outside so that she could run around and enjoy a little more freedom. Her mom, two dogs, and even her neighbor helped to keep Addison interested, happy and giving great smiles!

Portraits can be placed together to compliment one another or to tell a story. I love the flow of the three images above and the negative white space that draws your eyes to the middle of the piece.

With the temperature just starting to warm up, I am looking forward to more and more outdoor shoots. On location is my favorite kind of portraiture. Natural lighting cannot be beat and there are so many different locations to shoot - from natural to urban. The possibilites are endless.

Texture really adds a lot to a portrait. The boys jackets not only add that extra dimension, but the blue makes Ky's eyes look ever greener. The yellow helps to show off their tans and collared shirts always look a little more tailored than ones with crew necks. Choosing the perfect outfit is so important. Clothing is one of the key elements in setting the tone and style of any portrait.

Dave wanted to give his wife something special for her birthday. So, he and Logan picked out the perfect location, clothing to match and met to have their portraits taken together. They accomplished all of this while keeping the portraits a secret.
On Barb's birthday they surprsied her by playing their online gallery. I wish I could have seen her face :).

Ethan's In Home Shoot

Ethan had me cracking up during our shoot. He has such an imagination! We used his fruit snacks (a bribe for good behavoir :) as action figures, played trains, etch-a-sketch, hide and seek and a number of other games. Ethan told me all about his teachers, his dog, his favorite foods and colors. He had so much to say. I loved it!

Abby's Newborn Shoot

Yesterday was a terrific day! I got to meet Abby, her mom and her grandmother for an in home shoot. Abby is just a few days old and was welcomed home by her two big brothers. We had such fun dressing Abby in girly tutus, flowers and lots and lots of pink! She is so tiny and precious. It was such an honor to take her first professional pictures.

Will and Charlie

Could these two brothers be any dreamier? Their big eyes and dark eyelashes are unbelieveable. Someday I want to photograph their whole family, just to document that the little one is an absolute clone of his dad!
I had such a good time with the boys and their mom. We created the portraits at their home. The boys were relaxed in the familiar surrounding. Will even played walkie talkies with me and used his own "camera" to snap a few shots of his baby brother. How cute!

Jayden's Newborn Shoot

Jayden is just the cutest little guy! He is only a few days old, but he was wide awake and moving all around for most of his shoot, trying to crawl and roll over. I think he is going to be an athlete for sure. His parents were so patient. We kept him warm with extra heaters in the shooting room and took breaks so Jayden could eat and have his diaper changed. What a sweetheart!

Here is another example of one of our recent in home shoots. These portraits were created in the girls' kitchen in front of a sliding glass door. I love how the natural light is highlighting their hair and making their eyes shine. Kristi and Taylor's dad surprised their mom with a purse featuring the girls' portraits for her birthday. He set up the shoot and ordered the purse without their mom fiding out. Pretty sneaky!

Paige and Coulter

Yesterday, Paige and Coulter came over to my mom's house for an in home shoot. We were a little worried about the lighting because it was so gloomy out, but we got some great shots in before it got too dark.
Notice that Coulter is wearing a green shirt. If you have light eyes, wearing a green or blue top will really enhance your eyes and make them "pop". I love how the natural light fills both kids' eyes and really makes them shine.

Kevin's Senior Shoot

Ok, I just have to say it - Kevin is Heath Ledger's look alike. Even his mannerisms reminded me of the actor!

It was a pleasure to photograph Kevin. He has such purpose for someone so young. He is an accomplished cellist, who plays in the orchestra and has a band of his own. His plan is to graduate with a degree in Business and Music and then open a cafe on the beach. How amazing would that be?

Hmmmm. Got me to thinking.... I am 37 and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I better get working on that :).

Joey's In Home Shoot

I have really been loving these in home shoots. Kids are so comfortable and relaxed in their own surroundings. Mom and dad don't have to take them out in the cold. If babies need to eat or have their diapers changed, all of their things are so readily accessible. It's great!

Thanks to Joey's mom for having me come to their home to create 6 month portraits of this smiley little guy. He honestly did not stop smiling the whole time I was there. What a trooper! I love his hands behind his head. No, I did not put his arms up there. He struck that pose all on his own :).

March's First In Home Shoot

The first day of March. Yeah! Spring is almost here and the sun is shining today!! This morning I had the pleasure of photographing Ella and her brother Jack. These kids have the bluest eyes! I got to hear all about thier recent vacation to Disney and play hide and seek with them. It was quite an adventure. Ella practiced her princess smiles and Jack showed me his action figures. During all this fun, they let me take a few photographs (well, maybe more than a few :).

I absolutely love natural light and on location portraiture. This in home shoot was fantastic. The portraits were taken in the girls' grandmother's farmhouse, which was filled with antiques and natural light - a photographer's dream. Victoria and Madison were such willing models and they picked out the most stylish outfits. I had such a good time photographing them!

I am often asked if in home shoots really result in "portraits" or just "snap shots". For the answer, just take a look at these portraits. Each was created using only natural light in the home. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Las Vegas Shoot

Each year I look forward to traveling to Las Vegas for the world's largest photography and trade show convention. There are so many classes to attend, internationally renowned speakers to hear, so much to learn. The trade show is a fabulous way to actually see and feel new products - albums, jewelry, purses, props, backgrounds, etc. and to talk to vendors about how their products and services have to offer. The trade show takes hours to go through. The best part of the convention, however, is meeting other photographers and sharing ideas with one another. I have found that photographers, in general, are so willing to share their successes and failures and to help one another grow their businesses and become better photographers.

While in Vegas this time, I had the pleasure of photographing two handsome brothers. Jeremiah and Jacob's dad brought the boys to the Strip on Sunday afternoon for a shoot outside the Bellagio fountains and Ceasar's Palace. The weather was gorgeous and the boys, who are used to modeling, were wonderful subjects. We even got a great shot with dad at the end - one of my favorites.

Maternity shoots are always some of my favorites. The Thoeles were a terrific family to photograph - laid back, down to earth, and extremely friendly. The love they have for their son was so obvious. He was energetic, as kids his age are, but his parents were patient and attentive to his neeeds, allowing us to get the shots we were hoping for. I love how he is looking up at his mom in this one!

I had a great time laughing with Meghan and her mom this past Saturday. Meghan has absolutely gorgeous hair! Some of my favorite images from her shoot are the ones with her hair blowing. Directing a fan at your subject, when taking pictures, creates movement. It changes the feeling of a picture and adds interest. I am looking forward to editing the rest of Meghan's portraits for her gallery!

These two little ones were so fun to photograph. Lot of hugs and kisses for one another. My daughter, Rachel, was at the studio during this shoot and had a great time playing with N. while we photographed her little sister. Mom brought some really pretty bows for the girls' hair and both mom and dad were a tremendous help in getting the girls to laugh. I love the bright blue that comes out in their jeans.

I love spending my morning photographing sweet little babies. It always makes me think of when my kids were little and how precious my time with them was. M's mom brought her in today and even though we had to wake her from her nap, M. gave us tons of good smiles. Her brother was a great help, getting her to smile and look at the camera. He sang her songs and held up a flower over my head to get her attention. I couldn't have done it without him!
A Vintage enhancement has been added to this portrait to warm the skin tones. I love her innocent expression!

A Poetic Portraiture experience is very different from a typical portrait session. Poetic offers studio and on location photography to provide you with the opportunity to have your portraits taken where you feel most comfortable. One hour and two hour sessions are available to ensure that you never feel rushed and children have time to adjust to the camera, forget about my presence, and become themselves.

Each Poetic experience begins with a complimentary preportrait consultation, by phone, email or in the studio. The purpose of the consultation is to plan the photo shoot and determine the exact type of photographs you desire. Backgrounds, clothing, and props are decided upon and pricing and policies are discussed. The consultation is a great opportunity for us to get to know each other and tailor your portrait experience specifically to you.

Approximately one week after your session, a password protected online gallery is posted for you to preview your images. Your gallery will remain live for one week, after which time there is a $25 reposting fee. Your gallery will include fully retouched portraits, along with a number of unedited images. Selected images will also be included in bw and sepia toning. You may share your link with family and friends so that they too may enjoy your portraits. You are welcome to place your order by email, over the phone or to schedule a personalized viewing and ordering appointment at the studio where your images will be projected larger than life.

Sneak Peek and a Little About Saturation

I have had the pleasure of photographing this little cutie many times. I love the way her eyes light up when she smiles, how she crinkles her nose, and her gorgeous curly hair. Her mom brought the most beautiful dress. You could tell that E. felt like a princess in it. It's so important that kids like and feel good in the outfits they are wearing. It helps them to "get into character".

Here is one of my favorite portraits from E.'s shoot. Notice how different each portrait "feels" based on the coloring. In the first, the color is heavily saturated. It pops. In the other, the saturation has been taken way down, giving the image a softer feel. It's amazing how altering just one little thing can totally change a picture - cropping, coloring, textures, graphics, all kinds of enhancements are possible.

Here is a sneak peek at one of our Trendy Tots sessions. Pictured is just one of the outfits this little girl's mom brought. The jean jacket was an excellent idea! They also brought hats, flower clips, scarves, and a tutu! They couldn't have been better prepared.

This shoot was unforgettable. A. was so into being photographed. It was as if she had been a model for years. Look at the expressions she used. I think she may have been following Tyra's advice to show intensity through your eyes :). She was having so much fun! I think she would have let me photograph her for hours.

Kelsie came in today for her senior shoot. It was so nice to meet her. She was referred by one of our other seniors, THANKS Mariah! After her in studio shoot, Kelsie was brave enough to let us take a few shots of her outside in the snow. She has the bluest eyes - gorgeous!

Kelsie did a great job of choosing outfits that looked different from one another. When planning for your shoot, bring shirts with different necklines, long and short sleeves, dressy and casual clothing, bright colors and something black. Make sure you aren't packing 5 of the same shirt in different colors:).

Snowy Fun Sneak Peek!

I had the pleasure of photographing T and his family playing in the snow. What fun! If you have never thought of having pictures taken in the snow, you should :). We had a great time! T was such a trooper - giggling, sledding, making snow angels, throwing snow, loving the fact that his dad had to pull him all the way up the hill again and again. He was thrilled that the snow was up to his waist and coming down hard. The cold didn't even seen to phase him. Thanks so much to his parents for getting him all bundled up!

My name is Sam and I am a senior at Hudson High School. I am interning at Poetic Portraiture for 3 weeks to finish off my senior year. After high school I plan to attend Wittenberg University. Throughout high school I particpated in soccer and theatre. I enjoy painting, writing, and, of course, photography. I have been interested in photography since the eighth grade. This past year I took a course in taking and developing 35mm photography, which taught me to choose wisely about the photographs I take. I am doing this internship to experience what is it like to be a photographer to help me to decide if it is what I want to study in college and to have a career in after college.

Poetic is excited to announce that we will have two interns working with us in May, one from Hudson High School and one from Walsh. In addition to learning different aspects of the photography business, both students will complete a senior project. Each project will be a charitable one, focusing on creating portraits for families who are going through a difficult time due to illness.

Winning families will be chosen randomly on May 10th for a complimentary one hour shoot which must take place at the studio or a local outdoor location of their choice between May 11th and 22nd. Families will also recieve a CD of our favorite edited images from their session with a copyright release to have prints made or to share online as they choose.

Families will be required to sign a model release form. Images from these sessions will be used by the interns as part of their final projects and may be used by Poetic as well.

Portraits capture relationships and preserve memories. If you would like to nominate a family to take part in our project, please send us an email that includes the name of the family, the number of people to be included in the photographs and the reason you feel your nominated family would be the perfect candidate to be awarded the gift of portraiture.

Families will be chosen randomly on May 3rd.
This gift has no cash value and is not transferrable.

Birthday Club

I love photographing children. Parents are always so nervous that their little one(s) are not going to cooperate, but it always works out. When given enough time to adjust, kids settle down and we begin to play. It's during that "play" time that the kids give their "real" smiles.
I like to capture the big open eyes and laughing faces, but almost even more, I like the serious faces, the thinking faces, the shy faces, the quiet faces. Each expression tells a little more about who that child really is.

I appreciate so much photographing children year after year. I am always amazed by how much they have changed in such a short amount of time. To thank parents for giving me the opportunity to capture their children's milestones, Poetic is pleased to announce our new Birthday Club. I am excited to try out some of the new ideas and techniques that I recently learned at the convention in Vegas. However, I can't build my portfolio and advertising campaigns without models. Details:
I would really like to start offering boudoir photography to my clients. Boudoir portraits are growing in popularity so much so that there are studios who now offer only that type of photography. More and more women are realizing what an intimate, tasteful gift boudoir portraits can be. No longer are these type of portraits stereotyped as trashy, but photographed correctly are extremely artistic and beautiful. Boudoir sessions are done in the home where women feel most comfortable. Preportrait consultations are given so that any concerns women may have are discussed before hand. Please note that because my goal is to build my portfolio and have images to use in advertising, models will be required to sign a model release before their shoots.
I am also in need of families to model for lifestyle photography shoots. Lifestyle photography focuses on showing the real life of its subjects, highlighting the relationships between the people being photographed. Lifestyle photography typically results in black and white images and is of a more photojournalistic style - not posed, often not looking at the camera. Portraits of families laughing together, sharing a quiet moment, cuddling, these are the moments captured by lifestyle photography. Again, models will be required to sign a model release prior to the shoot.

Remember your childhood diary? I loved mine - glittery pink with a heart shaped lock and its very own little key, which I spent so much time finding the best places to hide. Even though I loved carrying that diary around, locking and unlocking it, choosing the perfect colored pen to mark its pages, I rarely ever wrote in it.

My blog is my modern day, all grown up diary, minus the secrets, minus the lock, minus the key. I always have the best intentions of writing in it, but.....

This is a start:
Dear Blog,

Tired and inspired, I retuned tonight from an awesome photography conference and trade show in Las Vegas. I love Vegas, all the color, the lights, the people. I don't know a better place to people watch and the opportunities to photograph are endless. I am feeling overwhelmed by all of the information I collected, but excited at the same time. I can't wait to try out what I learned and share it with my clients.

As a result of what I heard at the conference, feedback from client surveys, and my own observations, I am looking forward to making numerous changes to Poetic over the next couple of months. Look for new branding, the ability to purchase digital files, contests, give aways, new events, the welcoming of a sales consultant, a new referral program, a chance to join our birthday club and much more.

One thing about a blog, it's not as easy to fall asleep typing on a laptop as it is writing in a diary. ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

To better serve our clients, Poetic is now offering in-home appointments. Many of our clients choose to have us come to their homes because:
- they can relax and plan their shoots or choose their portraits while their children nap
or play comfortably in familiar surroundings.
- they want their portraits to reflect more of themselves by including their homes, cars,
hobbies, etc.
- they want to save time and avoid traveling with their children after perfecting their hair
and clothing.
- seniors can't possibly bring all the outfits they love to our studio, but at their homes
we can help them go through their closets to choose the clothing that will photograph
best.

Being in clients' homes also gives us a sense of their style, home decor, and available wall space. We can create more customized portraiture based on our observations and discussions with our clients.

There is no additional charge for in-home appointments. We shoot outdoors and indoors bringing all the necessary equipment to create beautiful portraits for you and your family.

We had the pleasure of photographing Liz and Eric's wedding in Funk, Ohio on June 12th. The location was absolutely gorgeous! Liz and Eric were married in a quaint country church. Their reception was held a short walk down a luminary lined street at the home of a relative. Guests enjoyed the night air under an elegantly lit tent with views of grazing horses and gently rolling hills.

The most touching part of Liz and Eric's wedding was the obvious amount of time and effort the couple's families put into making the night perfect. The attention to detail was unbelievable. It was apparent how much these two are loved.
